Welcome to ThisNairobi’s new series “What’s Trending in Kenya”. Each Monday, the ThisNairobi team will gather the top 5 trending topics from the past week and post them for your enjoyment. Read below for the second edition of this exciting new series.

1. SportPesa

Late last week, Kenya’s “Betting Control and Licensing Board” announced the suspension of SportPesa’s operations. The online betting platform had just begun trading again on Friday. The board cited use of SportPesa’s domains by Milestone Games Limited, which had been registered separately, as the reason for the company’s suspension. SportPesa was searched more than 500k times in Kenya this week.

2. Uhuru Kenyatta and the BBI

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga on Monday, October 26th to discuss opposition to sections of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report. Deputy President William Ruto as well as members of the Law Society of Kenya suggested changes. Uhuru Kenyatta — in relation to the BBI — was searched over 50K times this week. 3. Safaricom 

Kenya born telephone service and wireless provider is celebrating 20 years of. To celebrate, they are giving a free 20GB data bundle (valid for 7 days) to customers who have been on the Safaricom network for 20 years and customers turning 20 this year. Kenya loves free data bundles! “Safaricom” was searched more than 20K times last week. 

4. Tanzania Election Results 2020

Tanzanian president John Magufuli won in a landslide victory with 84% of the popular vote on Friday, making this his second term as President. Last week, early results had already placed him at the lead party. Main opposition parties are demanding a recall, claiming that ballot boxes were tampered with. “Tanzania Election Results 2020” and “Tanzania elections”  were searched over 40K times in Kenya over the course of the week.

5. Sean Connery 

The original James Bond died at 90 on October 31st. The famous actor coined the phrase “Bond, James Bond” in his role as the infamous spy. Sean Connery’s wife has  revealed the actor suffered from dementia before his death.  “Sean Connery” was searched more than 20K times in Kenya this week.
